“Made with patience, not preservatives.” This slogan grabbed my attention at the local supermarket as I and several other shoppers jammed the soup aisle in search of hearty blends to thaw winter’s chill. Campbell’s has introduced a new soup lineup dubbed “slow kettle style.”
Products are Burgundy Beef Stew with baby bella mushrooms, roasted garlic and rosemary; Portobello Mushroom and Madeira Bisque with shallots, thyme and sage; Southwest-Style Chicken Chili with black beans and sweet corn; Tomato and Sweet Basil Bisque with fresh cream and ground red pepper; and Tuscan-Style Chicken and White Bean Soup with asiago cheese, thyme and rosemary.
I haven’t had the chance to sample all five, but I’ll comment on the three that have been available at area markets.
My favorite so far is the Tuscan-Style Chicken and White Bean Soup. It’s simply divine and better than any white bean soup I have ever eaten — at home or in a restaurant. The broth is not overly salty and the beans (even when nuked in the microwave) retain a nice firm texture.
Even the herbs taste relatively fresh, hence the name of slow kettle soup. The Burgundy Beef Stew is loaded with tender chunks of meat and tasty mushrooms. It’s so filling that I could go all day without a snack before supper.
The Tomato bisque is almost perfect. I love the intense basil flavor, but it’s a little too sweet. I added a sprinkle of shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese to balance the sweetness out.
Overall, I’m loving these new products, and I look forward to trying out the full line.
