Penguins and barbecue aren’t a duo usually associated with one another. However, when you see the multicolored penguin statue greeting you at the corner of Mission Boulevard and College Avenue, it can only mean barbecue. In fact, the penguin is a barbecue mascot that has Fayetteville covered, from the east and west, and right in the heart of downtown Fayetteville.
The tasting experience is always divine, but my favorite locale is the East Avenue restaurant. Most locals recognize the drifts of hickory-smoked meat wafting up from its almost hidden College Avenue view. It’s a respite from hectic traffic and offers a perfect atmosphere for diners who love great barbecue on their plates and blues emanating from corner speakers. The eatery is especially packed during Fayetteville’s annual Bikes, Blues and Barbecue held each September.
From the black and white checkered floor to the red phones situated at booths where guests order, the restaurant combines a relaxed atmosphere that lets visitors sample a funky slice of the Fayetteville dining scene.
I’ve tried many specials, but I usually order the same dinner combo, which is served with a choice of two side items, including baked, brown or green beans, potato salad, coleslaw, french fries, macaroni and cheese and fried okra. The sliced brisket is delicious. It’s cut thin, but not too skimpy, and is perfectly tender. A sign of the meat’s quality is the sauce factor — you don’t have to drown it to achieve great flavors.
Favorite sides are the green beans, which taste like they were just picked from the garden and slow-cooked for hours with bacon, and the potato salad, a creamy dish, but with more mustard than some other versions and firmer potatoes, which is how I prefer the dish.
Appetizers are just as substantial as the dinners, where portions are generous. A few choices are the barbecue wings, barbecue pulled pork nachos and homemade onion rings. Salads are satisfying too, especially the smoked meat salad.
Desserts are also something extra special at Penguin Ed’s. They have the best cookies, about as big as a dessert saucer with a great, chewy texture. Also, the homemade fried pies dusted with cinnamon and sugar are worth the wait.
No matter which Penguin Ed’s location you find yourself visiting, it’s sure to be a satisfying treat.
