A shot of sweet and a bite of creamy, fluffy bliss. The Spritetastic was just what I needed to cool down on a blistering July day in downtown Fayetteville. Is this a new drink? No. Surprisingly the name describes a cupcake that is light and topped with zesty lime buttercream frosting.

This delectable treat is just one of nearly 70 different cupcake offerings at Bliss Cupcake Cafe. The shop does resemble a boutique with its pristine setting of cerulean walls with the Bliss name in gold lettering on the wall behind the cupcake counter. Customers may feast on their treats while gazing out the window on West Center Street near the downtown Fayetteville square.

Even the signs are as attractive as the eatery itself. A black and white striped awning and modern silver sign greet visitors to the glass front of the E.J. Ball Building. Small tables and a bar area are situated around the counter. A sign reminds guests to “Keep calm and have a cupcake”. It isn’t hard to do in the spa-like setting.

Bliss goes far beyond the traditional vanilla and chocolate. For the fruit lover, there is Lady Marmalade, a “moist orange cranberry cake with real cranberries baked in, and topped with orange marmalade and orange cream cheese frosting.” Pumpkin Spice offers the promise of fall with maple cream cheese frosting. And the Peanut Butter and Jelly is satisfying enough to be a meal on its own, with “peanuts baked in and filled with a strawberry filling and topped with whipped peanut butter frosting.

The Marshmallow Brownie topped with marshmallow frosting won best dessert at the 2009 Top Chefs & Rock Stars, a fundraiser for Peace at Home Family Shelter.

Note: Not all of these flavors are available at all times. A weekly menu is offered on the Web site, so check the link provided in the Restaurant Details section below to see the availability.

Speaking of meals, one of the more unusual cupcakes is the Tomato Basil Parmesan. The savory cake is topped with imported, hand-grated parmesan.

My personal favorite is the Chocolate Milkshake. So creamy, and it even comes with its own edible stir stick!

Bliss is certainly about good taste, and the cupcake aesthetics are equally impressive. The Red Velvet Razorback, touted as a local favorite, is gorgeous. The red cake has a hint of chocolate and is topped with cream cheese frosting. Watching your diet? That’s also covered with sugar-free and gluten free choices.

If you want a cupcake that tastes good and serves a worthy cause, then order the Forget Me Not, a vanilla cupcake decorated with vanilla frosting and purple buttercream sprinkles. This cupcake utilizes the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature purple and donates 10 percent of proceeds from this cupcake.

Ingredients are “the finest local” to ensure a “mouthful of happy.” That certainly seems to be the case as loyal fans enter the shop to settle in one of the cozy chairs and dispense lemon water into paper cups as they enjoy their mouthful of bliss. Fayetteville is lucky to have a cupcake shop that is normally found in larger cities such as Los Angeles and New York. After all, the cupcake craze was catapulted onto the national scene with Sex & the City gals eating pink frosting-coated cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery.

Another trend found in major cities is the frosting shot. For anywhere from 50 cents to $1.75, urbanites can get a quick sugar fix with a serving of their favorite frosting. Bliss offers frosting shots for 50 cents. So after seeing a play at the Walton Arts Center or listening to your favorite band on Dickson Street, head over to Bliss Cupcake For a satisfying treat, whether it is a full-sized cupcake or a small serving of fun flavor.

  1. They are super cute! Exactly what a great friend you’re. I’d put a ladybird

    • I honestly kind of wing it for icing these days and go for taste and consistency to decide when it’s done. Start with the below and adjust as needed: Buttercream Frosting Recipe: 1 pound powdered sugar, 1 stick butter, 1 teaspoon extract (vanilla or your choice), 3 tablespoons milk or other liquid. For the chocolate icing here, I used melted baker’s chocolate instead of milk, basically. To frost, use a pastry/piping bag or a plastic sandwich baggie in a pinch! For the cupcakes above (chocolate icing), I used an Ateco #199 tip. To create that swirl, I started on the inside, piped in larger circles around to the outside, then smaller on top back into the middle to finish. For the (vanilla buttercream), I used a Wilton #1M. I piped 3-4 dollops close together on each cupcake. To get a nice peak using either tip, stop piping just as you pull up. Hope that’s useful! Good luck, and let me know how your cupcakes turn out!
